Nicole in the Studio

I do enjoy when things come full circle. Janet and John contacted me some time ago to see about photographing their new daughter Nicole. Janet had some ideas that could not be met by the local JCPenny studios...(restraint prevents me from commenting here - I am nothing if not mature).

In truth, I have not worked with babies much -okay, not at all - so I felt some...butterflies at the thought. My own kids are years out of diapers, would I be able to interact with a baby. Would I become one of those awkward people who is too loud and brash - to cover up that awkwardness? Me loud? (No comment here thank you).

And all was well as it turned out. Nicole (9 months) was a delight. Happy and sweet, despite being dragged out on a miserably rainy day. Her folks were as relaxed and easy as I remember.

Apparently an old dog can learn new things!

Kristen in the Pool

Kristen’s mother told me that she is the one in their family who keeps everyone on track – a real Post-It Note, list-keeping prodigy.

So it was with some trepidation that I met with her to discuss her senior shoot. Really organized people make me a bit nervous, since they are often humorless (sorry to those who might object to this, but it is based on empirical data, or is it observational?) It’s technical either way.

If you get right down to it - if I am to be completely honest with myself – I secretly judge people on whether I can make them laugh. It’s childish, but if someone doesn’t find me funny…. Ummm, that’s not good. It is needy and a little sad, but there it is, my soul bared to the masses. Judge me not.

I met with Kristen and her boyfriend Nick (who did not know he would be my assistant at the shoot, poor chap), and I was afraid she would be some sort of stern, type A student.

She was not. She was cool and laid back – willing to consider any idea or location. The day of the shoot, she even suggested we use their pool for part of the shoot.

This is the delight of working with high school students. Poised as they are on the knife edge of childhood and the world of adults; they are a volatile amalgam of heart and mind. She was a natural.

And she laughed at me. Happiness. Bob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell PhotoBob Schnell Photo

The Bordewyks go out in the yard

Sunday afternoon in the country (or country enough for this city boy at any rate), and I was with Jennifer and Chad, and their twin girls - Mallory and Faith. Six year old twins, but the easy kind: one blonde and one brunette -both happy and great.

It can be a difficult thing to have your picture taken; to invite a stranger to your home and then have them point a camera at you for a couple of hours. The Bordewyks handled it like ducks to water. Gracious and relaxed, I felt like an old friend in moments. Mallory and Faith were not shy about getting their picture taken (what little girl is?), and they charmed immediately.

The Hinckley Family

My good friend and fellow photographer Doug Hinckley of Valiant Photography Studios asked me if I would mind taking some shots of his family. Knowing full well the frustration of photographing your own family, I readily agreed. (Plus, he clearly know where the talent is - hee!)

We gathered up the clan and went to a field close to thier home. Libby and Kate - his two girls are as cute as can be, and as easy to work with as you can want. And Doug's wife Jill is a beauty.
Okay, truth be told, Doug is pretty hot too.
So, adorable kids, beautiful wife and good looking to boot. I could hate them a little.

Anyway, we had a lot of fun, and I was truly touched and honored to have been asked for this kind of work. Doug is the current Governor of the state chapter of the Professional Photographers Association, so he has a few other photographers he could have tapped for this.
Thanks folks.
